The Documents & Desktop Folders
The Desktop and the Documents folder serve the same purpose: there's no reason to use both.
It doesn't really matter which one you use and which one you abandon. After trying both, it seems to be a bit easier to use the Desktop folder to store files.
So we're going to abandon the Documents folder and keep everything on the Desktop.
In order not to cover our wallpaper with files, we'll just hide them:
defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop -bool false; killall Finder
Result: all our files are in the same place, easily accessible via cmd-shift-d from any program.
